Adding or Removing a Dependent

Here are the answers to some general questions about adding or removing a dependent.

When May I Enroll My Eligible Family Members?

You have 30 days from your date of hire to enroll your eligible members in the basic benefit package.

You also have 30 days from the date of a qualifying event to enroll your eligible family members on your health, dental and vision plan. A qualifying event is described as marriage, birth, adoption, establishment of legal guardianship, establishment of a registered domestic partnership or when you have lost other health, dental or vision coverage you may have either through another employer or through a family member’s employer.

What Should I Do If I Wait Longer Than 30 Days To Enroll?

If you wait longer than 30 days from your date of hire or qualifying event to enroll your eligible family members, you must wait to enroll until the annual open enrollment period held each year usually during the month of May.

When May I Delete My Eligible Family Members?

You may delete eligible family members or make changes to coverage during an open enrollment period that is usually held in the month of May, or within 30 days of a qualifying event. A qualifying event is described as:  

  • Change in employment status for employee or spouse
  • Change in dependents (Birth, adoption, legal guardianship, ineligibility of dependent child due to age/school status, death)
  • Change in marital status
  • Significant change in employee's plan cost
  • Becoming ineligible for current plan coverage due to change in address
  • Loss of coverage 

You are responsible for updating your dependent status during the plan year. Any elections that are made during open enrollment or a qualifying event will remain in effect for the entire plan year. Failure to submit notification in a timely manner may impact dependent eligibility for health care continuation under COBRA, and may result in you incurring liability for medical expenses for non-eligible dependents.
