Job stability, longevity, and career advancement
The County of Santa Clara wants our employees to feel confident in the work they are doing now and know that we want you to learn and grow throughout your career here. You're already aware that serving our community takes employees with unique character and skills. But also know that many of the services we provide to residents are only available through the County. And the need for our specialized services isn't likely to go away. With that in mind, here are a few points to think about when considering your stable, long-term career with the County of Santa Clara:
- We have over 2,000 different job classifications requiring over 23,000 employees! The size and scope of our organization provides room to grow whether it's in the type of work or specialty you start off in at the County, or if you want to learn new skills and move to other jobs or services you may find stimulating.
- Once you are employed with the County, there are opportunities to apply for open positions through transfers and promotions, which are ONLY available to current County employees. You're not competing with outside candidates.
- Practically all full-time coded positions (non-executive positions) enjoy structured, automatic wage increases (we call these 'steps'), and the potential to promote to the next level in your job classification series.
For example, if you start as an Office Specialist I, you'll have five consecutive annual wage increases, or "steps." You also have the opportunity to increase your skills and promote within your existing classification series to Office Specialist II, then Office Specialist III, and then move on to a higher job classification, like Executive Assistant. With each promotion, you'll begin a new set of steps.
- Many classifications receive "longevity pay" - incentives recognizing the value of our long-term employees.
- We encourage our employees to consider their career arc - thinking about where they are now and where they want to be as their career progresses. We then support your desire to advance your career here through training, mentorships, and other growth-specific opportunities. We believe our line-level employees of today can become our managers and executives of the future. We also belive that becoming a manager requires a different skill set than doing a job "hands on." Therefore, we provide the training it takes to teach new supervisors and managers these new skill sets.
- Most employees that are represented have access to professional development, tuition reimbursement, and certification maintenance funds for training related to their area of expertise.
- Being a long-term employee allows your to grow not only by learning, but through mentoring junior employees.
